Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte: Gypsy Museum

Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte or with its English name Sacromonte Caves Museum is the place to understand the history, culture and the nature of Granada, Spain. Actually Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte is not a regular museum with a building and full of artworks or heritage. This museum is a house of man-made caves with a history of more than 100 years. By visiting the museum you will understand the living of the people more than a century ago. How do they cook their food? What did they drink? That will be a different experience for you.

Sacromonte is the historic region of the Granada. You will see the way of life the people lived in the man-made caves at the museum. Cave houses decorated with the real items used by the people lived there; basketry, ceramics, weaving and more. Every year more than 25.000 people visit the museum. If you visit the museum please don’t forget to follow the end of the route which leads to Barranco de Los Negros proper. You will enjoy the stunning view of the Alhambra Palace from the hills of Sacramento.

Where is The Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte?

Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte is located in the Barranco de Los Negros, very center of the Sacromonte, Granada. This small and boutique museum is just in front of the great Alhambra Palace. So, if you are in Spain you will probably visit the Alhambra Palace and may share a couple of hours to see this one, right? 🙂 Give it a chance! The best way to get to the museum is by taking a taxi from the center, it is just a couple of kilometers. Also, you can take the bus from Line C34 (Sacromonte-Centro) and get off at the Cno. del Sacromonte 109 bus stop. From the Cno. del Sacromonte 109 bus stop just follow this route to get to the museum, it is just 300 meters. Bus line C34 operates between 07.30 to 22.00 every day. You can buy bus tickets from the shops in the city center.

Opening Hours and Entrance Fee

The museum is open from 10.00 to 20.00 every day between 15th March to 14th of October. During the winter seasons, opening hours change from 10.00 to 18.00 between 15th October to 14th March. There is no limitation on the duration of the visit. You can stay as long as you want but generally, the tour will take mostly no more than one hour. So, it will be a good stop before or after you visit the Alhambra Palace. The entrance fee for the museum is 5 Euro per person. Unfortunately, there is no discount for kids or the elderly.
